Check the following Points before rushing your applications to an university

Selecting the university which suits your profile and requirements of your career ahead is very important. A careful research about the school and the requirements of the school under considering would help you secure an I20. Use the checklist below to round up on your universities to apply.

  • Check for accredition of the University. A University without accredition may have a long term effect on your career and your financial stability. It may have a lower quality in education.

  • Rankings play a very important role in deciding a university but, dont use the rankings as the only criteria in choosing a university. No rankings in place is accurate and more over the rankings are usually not course specific. The reputation of any institution mainly depends on the number highly qualified faculties they have and the research work conducted by them.

  • Determine the type of the university under consideration. There are mainly two types of universities, Public (a State University) and Private. The Course Fee is the major difference between such universities. Generally Public Universities charge lower than Private Institutions.

  • Check your eligibility for a course offered by an department. For eg: Certain courses might be offered only to graduates in electronics and not to electrical.

  • Check if the department you intend to join offers your course of interestyou’re your specialization specifically.

  • Check if you are applying to the correct department with correct codes at the college.

  • Check the course content of the program. This is very important as the course content may vary from university to university. Study the course content to check whether it matches your interests.

  • Check the number of regular - full time faculties available for the major/program you choose. Check if they are experts in their respective fields and possess considerable experience. Feel free to ask them any doubt about the program.

  • Check what are the ongoing research projects undertaken by the school/ university and especially by the department you are planning to join. Find out the researchers / faculties working on those projects.

  • Make it sure that the school offers financial aid / scholarships to International students. If you are applying to a school that doesn't offer financial aid/scholarship or any other grant, think again as your might end up in debt at the end of your program

  • Financial aid /scholarship mainly depends on research activities, sponsored projects and availability of funds.

  • Check the number of International students on the campus.

  • Check your GPA (Grade Point Average)!! Check if your GPA matches with requirements of the school. As most universities in India don’t grade under GPA, make sure you have your scores well above the 60% level.

  • Consider the job opportunities both full time and part time in and around the location of the university. Full time jobs might help you after your study and part time jobs might help you during your course duration.

  • Check for Student Associations in the university and try contacting the students from the university.

  • Know about the University and the Faculty as this would surely help you counter those Visa Questions.

  • Learn about the location of the university, climate and the crime rates (especially against international citizens) as your safety is surely a concern for your parents back home.
